Our super-secret project is now public - tell all your friends! Tina and I (more Tina) have started thebystander.ca, your one-stop location for all things Ottawa arts. There’s a show player, a podcast download, regular updates - pretty much everything you’ll ever need.
Visit, subscribe, laugh, love. You’ll be into it, we promise.
You know why there haven’t been updates for a while? A super-secret project Tina and I are workin on, which should go live this weekend. stay tuned for updates.

Sugar Sammy's previous name: Suave Sammy
Today on the show we interviewed Luca Somethingorother, a local musician who’s putting together the 2nd annual Ottawa Rock Lottery. It’s an event that mixes and matches local musicians to create something new, but not necessarily better - check out this story in the Xpress from last year by friend of the show Calum Marsh: http://www.ottawaxpress.ca/music/music.aspx?iIDArticle=14574
We also interviewed Sugar Sammy, the dashing comedian you see to the left of my post. He’s a Montreal-born Canadian who uses his Indian background for great comedic effect, and his unique upbringing allows him to do comedy in 4 different languages.
Unfortunately, what you didn’t hear today was the dulcet tones of my stunning co-host, Tina Hassannia. I missed last week due to illness, and Tina returned the favour - I don’t know how that’s a favour, but whatever. She was replaced with Hisham Kelati and Travis Boisvenue, but they can’t fill the void she’s left in my life this week. Get well soon, Tina.
Music:
Geoff Berner - Half German Girlfriend
Ennui - The Alphabet Song (Luca’s band)
Leif Vollebekk - In the midst of Blue & green (I think I have those colours wrong)
Tomorrow’s show might seem a little lonely, because as of right now my voice sounds like a cross between Al Pacino after a carton of cigarettes and Benicio Del Toro in Sin City. Tina has bravely stepped up and may be doing the interview that I cancelled because of sickness. Will it all work out? Who knows! Tune in tomorrow.

We will be talking to Matt Cully from the awesome seven-member collective, Bruce Peninsula today. As I wrote in the XPress piece (which comes out Thursday), these guys can soften even the most atheistic asshole — a.k.a. me — into a pile of spiritual mush. Listen!
What else… I don’t know. Peter will have something, I’m sure. Maybe a SuperBowl wrap-up that will cause me eyes to glaze over.
Last but not least: (I think) the lovely Jessica Ruano will be giving us a quick run-down of some amazing February arts events.
Peeps:
Today we spoke to
Riley Stewart, who plays Scout in the Vision Theatre production of Life After God. The play runs until the 31st at the Arts Court Theatre. Tickets are $25, $20 for student/seniors. More info.
We also spoke to Sandra Graham, the director of the U of O’s performance of Carmen. Only three performances left: Friday Jan 30, Saturday Jan 31 — both at 7pm — and a 2pm matinee on Sunday, Feb 1. The opera takes place at Alumni Auditorium at uOttawa. For more info, call 613 562-5733. The Ottawa Citizen recently profiled Sandra.
Songs:
All The Money I Had is Gone - The Deep Dark Secrets
In My Blood - The DoneFors
White Winter Hymnal (Fleet Foxes cover) - Ruby Isle
We Become Our Own Wolves - Rae Spoon
There Are Maybe Ten or Twelve - A.C. Newman
Events:
01/29/2009 - C3: COMEDY CARES @ Aulde Dubliner, 8:30pm. The picture for this Facebook event is from Psycho, so I don’t know what kind of humour you can expect, but… Still. These guys (and gals!) are good. It’ll be interesting to see how they pull off a stand-up show at a pub like the Aulde Dubliner.
01/30/2009 - Politique, Relief Maps, Ennuie @ Zaphod’s. It’s only six freaking dollars. And they have a cute poster.
01/30/2009 - Dharma Arts: 3-D. An arts magazine that is throwing a big party and featuring all kinds of live art performances that include arty haircuts, or something. That’s what Jessica Ruano told me. @ the new Raw Sugar Cafe, which is kind of like Umi, but… sweeter?
01/31/2009 - DISORGANIZED and TIMEKODE join forces to present DISCODE #3, plus a very special screening: A Portrait of Arthur Russell. Sounds nothing short of awesome. @ the Eri Cafe. 10pm.
Download show: coming soon.
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal is probably one of the finest “new” (ish?) web comics out there. One recent and excellent example of the comic’s hilarity:

Also, the latest Cowbirds in Love is a cute word-play strip about one of our favourite public broadcasters.

we play our favourite xmas songs and discuss our favourite television specials.
merry christmas!
(or as they say in england: happy christmas!)
